Recently I found myself photographing the Bravo! Wedding Affair at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Downtown Portland and mingling about in the trends for 2010.  Seems as though a popular color for 2010 will be turquoise and orange, two colors implemented into several designs at the show.  Also, for next years weddings there will be a growing trend toward a DIY approach, or at least chic designs that appear as though it could have been a DIY.  I thought I would share a few of my favorite photos from the show.

A client asked me, “what happens to all the photos that you don’t show?”  Typically I just set them aside and don’t do anything with them, but I started thinking about this question.  Why don’t I do something with all the photos that no one ever sees?  Soooo, here goes.  I’ve selected the best “outakes” from the wedding season and I’m putting them on my blog.  No one is safe and no one is excluded.  Funny faces, eyes closed, and strange gestures…they are all here.  I’m sure to catch some flack from this one, but hopefully everyone knows it’s all in good fun.  Thanks to all the people who did something funny to make it here on my blog.  You’re the best!

A long way from Coos Bay and in town for the weekend Katie’s mother Gina had a good laugh with us while I took some mother-daughter photos.  At one point I though I had lost them to laughter…only to find out that they were laughing at me, more specifically my left eye.  It seems as though my left eye is moving all around while I’m looking through the camera.  This could explain why my right eye is the strongest of the two (I wear glasses).  Hmm…all those years of squinting with the left eye closed and only using the right eye, possibly.

A wedding in the Portland Rose Garden on an absolutely beautiful day!  I think Gidgette stole the show and gets the award for the best looking ring-bearer I’ve seen all season.  They did most of the work for me, I just had to show up and take a few photos.  I thought I would share my favorites.

I traveled up to my favorite Portland neighborhood for some late evening photos. The Drews family was my subject for an hour of organized chaos. I had a blast shooting the kids. I’m glad that they were not shy. Once they got use to me being in their backyard they let their hair down. Good stuff.

Thanks Amy

Kevin & Jessica, thank you for having me at your wedding.  Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do.  I wish you the all the success in the world you can find.  I would love to know how you are doing from time to time, so when you find a place south of the border to email me, please do.

Your friend,

Bryan

A really cool couple with a sweet and sincere wedding.  Without warning the clouds opened and the rain fell, just as we had all moved outside for family photos.  I’ve not had to scramble that fast – ever.  Props to Cathy and Aaron for “going-with-the-flow” and not letting the rain spoil our photo-fun. At the reception afterwards Aaron, the Groom, was dancing out of his mind!  I’ve never seen anyone dance quite like that.  What a great party!  We had plenty of opportunities to take some really great photos during the day.

By pure coincidence I had the opportunity to photograph another Eugene couple, Kate & Aaron who invited me to come to Yachats, Oregon for the ceremony.  Kate is an accomplished photographer herself…yeah, no pressure right!?  For a photographer to trust me with her wedding, well, that was a huge compliment.  They were celebrating but it was bitter-sweet as the very next day they would be driving out of Oregon to start their careers.  It was a first for me being a part of a wedding/good-bye party.  I volunteered to take some photos the next morning of the send-off and I’m glad I was there.  I wonder how far they traveled before stopping to untie the strings of cans on the bumper of the moving truck?

I wish them the best of luck with their new rings and new city.

A few weeks ago I traveled to Eugene, Oregon for Starla & Nima’s wedding at the Owen Rose Garden. I could not help but notice how Nima looked at Starla So much love in his heart, and multiple times I heard him whisper “I-love-you” to Starla. It was warming to witness.

At the ceremony there was a string laid in front of each row of chairs. The rings were passed along the string from guest to guest up to the waiting couple and minister. Very, very cool.

From the Rose Garden we traveled to the University of Oregon campus for photos of just the two of them. We had time to relax and experiment with different solutions and locations. It’s rare when, during the pace of a wedding, I’m able to slow down and explore multiple locations with the bride and groom. It was a wonderful luxury and I was able to capitalize with some outstanding photos that I’m very proud of. Thanks Starla and Nima!

Cri*te*ri*um (krI’-tir-E-&m), noun [Latin]:
A bicycle street race. Competitors must complete the most laps in a set period of time. Very fast. Very exciting.

Gayle and I met some friends downtown for the 09 Portland Twilight Criterium and took along my camera for some shots.  I was right up against the barrier and leaning out over it at times to get a few shots.  The cyclists were speeding past me at speeds close to 30 miles an hour and the gust of wind that accompanied the peloton was impressive.  Here are a few of my favorite shots from the evening.
